Launched in 2012, "Mbongui Square" is an annual interdisciplinary art & multicultural community event organized by Kiandanda Dance Theater
and conceived by artictic director Byb Chanel Bibene.
Born from the desire to reinforce the notion of community through the arts, the event gathers dancers, musicians, visual artists, and spoken word performers from the Bay Area, and from across the world, for a sharing of their talent and art.
In Congo, where the term "Mbongui" originated, "Mbongi Square" refers to the central square in traditional villages where neighbors and families meet to share stories and legends that serve to teach and preserve knowledge. "Mbongui Square", the village center, is a place for discourse, hospitality, wise words, and honest counsel.
In the Bay Area, "Mbongi Square" celebrates the Arts and hopes to facilitate interchange between people, without discrimination, and by means of deeper human connections through inspiring collaboration, and transformative experiences.
