Introducing Maya Hayuk’s Exclusive Collection for the Sunglass Hut Artist Series


The Sunglass Hut Artist Series pairs up-and-coming artists with iconic brands, creating one-of-a-kind collectible sunglasses in support of OneSight – the foundation that helps the world see.

This year, Sunglass Hut has partnered with Maya Hayuk, a Brooklyn and San Francisco-based artist whose paintings, prints, drawings and photographs range from tender mockeries of idealized social rituals to transcendent portrayals of geometries giving way to nature. She was raised in the suburbs of Baltimore by Ukrainian immigrant parents and converted to punk rock at an early age.

From her large-scale murals to small works on paper, Hayuk’s obsession with symmetry and her collection of images plays out in works that espouse the traditional as well as the innovative. Her work for the Sunglass Hut Artist Series evokes inspirations ranging from chandeliers and holograms, to Mexican woven blankets and Ukrainian Easter eggs, to crystal healing light and totally good vibrations, to views from the Hubble Telescope and time travel.

Along with her solo work, Hayuk frequently collaborates with other artists and musicians. She's made album covers, posters, tee shirts, photographs , video installations and stage sets for Animal Collective, TV on the Radio, Devendra Banhardt, Prefuse 73, Awesome Color, Oakley Hall and The Beastie Boys, among others. In October 2008, she created her first sensory deprivation sound experiment inside a pitch black shipping container called Everywhere Is Nowhere Everywhere. In March 2009, she was commissioned to create a massive outdoor sculpture for the Scope Fair, which she realized in collaboration with Ben Wolf. Her solo show, A Path For The Light, is on view from June - August 2009 at ALICE gallery in Brussels. Her work has been exhibited and published extensively internationally in galleries, museums, on the streets and in various printed and electronic media.

Last year, Sunglass Hut partnered with artist Chris Mendoza for the first installment of the Artist Series, resulting in a huge success. Available at both an in-store event and on-line, the limited edition frames sold to a wide range of consumers looking for a unique pair of sunglasses.

OneSight is a family of charitable programs dedicated to improving vision for those in need worldwide, through outreach, research and education. Since 1988, their global outreach programs have helped more than six million people around the world see more clearly. OneSight also supports research and education, granting more than $6 million towards vision preservation, and thousands of dollars in scholarships to students pursuing a degree in optometry.

Maya’s work for the Artist Series is filled with vibrant colors and designs that are rooted in her solo work.
