With Valentine’s Day on the horizon comes New in Town, a romantic comedy fronted by Renee Zellweger and Harry Connick Jr. Zellweger plays icy corporate go-getter, Lucy Hill. Che: Part Two : 2.5 out of 5 stars.
Taken as a single film, Che will likely hold the distinction of being the LONGEST film in recent memory at a runtime topping 4 hours. Mercifully, director Steven Soderbergh elected to break this epic film into two separate films -- Che, Part One and Che, Part Two. The first "part" of Che focuses on Ernesto "Che" Guevara’s rise within the Cuban Revolution from doctor to commander to revolutionary hero. In Part Two, Che takes his show on the road to Bolivia where he attempts to incite yet another revolution.More | | Nearly Stillborn Rating: 2 out of 5 stars.
The Day the Earth Stood Still was released in 1951 and contained a chilling message about how man’s inhumanity to man would inevitably spell our doom. The film clearly reflected fears about the Cold War and communism. Fifty plus years later, director Scott Derrickson is at the helm of the remake with the same name. While much has changed in fifty plus years (the end of the Cold War for starters), man’s continued inhumanity to man is sadly still alive and well. 5 stars.More | | Not a Prize Winner... If you’re looking for action, familial dysfunction, dark comedy, and plenty of Paul Oakenfold music, Nobel Son is undoubtedly the film of the year. However, if you’re looking for a consistently engaging film with well constructed characters and a believable story, this film tries nobly, but largely falls short.More | | A Girl and her Dog Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.
Bolt (voiced by John Travolta) is a dog who has it all. He’s got adorable canine good lucks, a sweetheart owner (Penny voiced by Miley Cyrus), more kibble than a dog pound, and super powers that would make Batman cower in fear. Bolt finds himself saving Penny from the "green-eyed man" and his henchmen day in and day out. The one chink in Bolt’s armor is that he actually doesn’t have superpowers and his owner isn’t really his owner, she’s an actress.More | | The Art of Deception Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Oscar season is officially upon us with the release of Ridley Scott’s latest effort, Body of Lies. This intense spy thriller is headed by two box office heavyweights, Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe. DiCaprio plays top CIA operative Roger Ferris who works in the most dangerous terrorist hotbeds in the world. Pulling his strings back home is Ed Hoffman (Crowe) whose motives and methodology put his top operative in hot water time and again. Trust is a double edged sword in this world where being on the wrong edge can easily put you in a body bag.More | | In a world gone blind, what if you were the only one who could see? Over the years, we’ve seen just about every kind of epidemic imaginable on the big screen. We’ve seen viruses that turn people into flesh eating zombies, viruses that cause near instantaneous internal hemorrhaging, and viruses that turn people in mutant superheroes. In Blindess, we ‘see’ a very different kind of virus; one that merely handicaps everyone in the form of taking away their vision. Exactly how one’s humanity and character is revealed in the face of such tragedy is the thrust of Fernando Meirelles’ (City of God) latest effort.More | | All men aren’t created evil Igor (voiced by John Cusack) has a bit of a problem. He has a sizable hunch planted firmly on his back. But, that’s just the beginning. In the land of "Malaria", being born with a hunch means you’re destined to a tedious life as a lab assistant serving a mad scientist. For most "Igors", this is no big deal. But our Igor aspires to greater things, namely a diabolical invention of his own that will make him the greatest mad scientist ever.More | | Released on 4AD, 8/19/08 Stereolab was one of the first groups to sport the label "post-rock" back in the early 90s. Their sound includes an abundance of vintage electronic keyboard heavily influenced by 60s pop, lounge, and experimental music. While Stereolab has received plenty of critical acclaim, understandably their unique sound has made commercial success elusive. However, for those who can appreciate the distinctive Stereolab sound, Chemical Chords should not disappoint.More | | War is Hell Making a film is pretty much a thankless march through hell. War is no walk in the park either. Making a film about war? Pure, unadulterated insanity. Tropic Thunder begins with harried director Damien Cockburn (Steve Coogan) on the verge of a meltdown as production of his epic Vietnam war film Tropic Thunder has come to a standstill. His three self-absorbed megastars (Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr., and Jack Black) can’t get their act together and production is a month behind after a mere five days of shooting!More |
