Master Class - Ashwin Batish: Application of Indian Music Concepts to Jazz and World Music

Local sitar and tabla player Ashwin Batish is credited with contributing to the growing re-vitalization of a new genre of Indian music, called "world beat raga rock." He was trained in the North Indian classical tradition by his father, the legendary Pandit Shiv Dayal Batish, and later cultivated his own unique fusion of music based on the rich traditions of Indian, African, Middle Eastern, and other cultures, mixed with a Western beat taken from pop, rock, and jazz. In this master class, Ashwin will explain some of the intricacies of Indian music and how to apply this knowledge to jazz and world music. He will be joined by his son Keshav Batish on tabla; pakhavaj and drums; his sister Meena Batish on vocals; and Myron Dove on bass.
