The San Francisco Maritime Museum features interactive exhibits, ship models, figureheads, maritime paintings, photos, and artifacts. Its library has a premiere collection of martime history: books, magazines, oral histories and reference service to plans, documents and 250,000 historic photographs.
Also in the vicinity: Hyde Street Pier includes the 1886 square-rigger Balclutha, the three-masted 1895 schooner C.A. Thayer. The scow schooner Alma and the 1890 ferryboat Eureka and the USS Pampanito. Visitors experience what life was like for submariners during World War II when they step aboard this fully restored, floating exhibit, now a national landmark.
