Major League Quidditch is coming to San Francisco on Saturday, July 30.
The San Francisco Argonauts are hosting a three game series against their division rival, the Los Angeles Guardians, at Beach Chalet Pitch from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The event is free and open to the public.
Quidditch is a gender-integrated, contact sport particularly popular on college campuses around the world. Ten years ago, the rules were adapted from J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter book series, incorporating elements of basketball, rugby and dodgeball.
Today, quidditch is on its way to becoming a professional sport. Major League Quidditch, a national league that runs from June 1 to August 31, played its first season in 2015. The inaugural MLQ season featured eight teams from the eastern United States and Canada.
During the offseason, MLQ doubled its number of cities and players. The league added eight new teams from the southern and western United States, including the hometown San Francisco Argonauts.
Heading into the final home matches of the regular season, the Argonauts sit in third place in the West Division with a 3-3 record.
San Francisco faces a tough test against Los Angeles. The Guardians are one of the favorites to win the league title at the 2016 MLQ Championship in League City, Texas on Aug. 20-21.
