Less a club and more of a laid-back neighborhood dive, Mac’s is one of the longest-running gay bars in the South Bay. Cheap drinks and a mellow atmosphere lure a clutch of weekday regulars, gay and straight. Weekends bring a crush of patrons pre-gaming before heading off to a dance club or ducking in for a reprieve from the brain-rattling bass at Splash a few doors down. This is a conversation bar, where the jukebox is low enough to talk over but loud enough to keep the energy up. Nary a cover charge, long hours (noon to 2am most days) and cut-rate drink specials will hopefully keep Mac’s a downtown fixture for many more years to come.
