MacArthur B Arthur

Arts , Gallery

Open Sundays from 1-5 and by Appointment

MacArthur B Arthur is a project space in Oakland devoted to showing visual, sound and performance art by emerging Bay Area artists. Our goal is to provide North Oakland a venue to gather and consider new and inspiring ideas by hosting collaborative, interactive idea based exhibitions. It is a space to see art as well as participate in dialogue. MacArthur B Arthur hosts readings, screenings and community events as well as occasional musical performances. Started by Kevin Clarke in August 2009 it is now co-administered and curated by Kevin, Alison Offill-Klein, Aaron Harbour, and Jackie Im. MacArthur B Arthur is a home as well as a gallery. It is a converted store front with large glass windows. When Kevin is home and there is art on the walls, he often sits in the gallery eating breakfast or drinking coffee and waves to passers by. When people are interested in the space he invites them in and talks to them about the art. It is an exercise in breaking down distinctions between home and gallery and divisions of art from life. It is about building a community around visual art.
