Locus Open Mic

If seeing people just like you get all fired up on stage inspires you at all, then get you rear on down to Locus 1640 Post's monthly open mic.

Performers have been known to bust out laughing on stage, expose their deepest fears, hit a raw nerve, or belt out at the top of their lungs. It's cathartic. Plus, it's a social event -- with host Jane Kim accompanied by a crew of "Bay Area Hotties."

Locus invites participants of any background to take a place in front of the mic, although the people who show up are predominantly young, Asian American urbanites, representing a wide spectrum of backgrounds. Even if you're shy, you can people-watch by looking in the strip of mirrors that run all around the room, and through the entryway's 70s-style mural.

The goal of the venue is to "promote Asian Pacific American consciousness and community through the arts," and the poetry tends to reflect this: One poet summed up his feelings of identity in a piece that spoke of singing his love, and "burying our faces in each others black hair."

Locus 1640 Post is supportive and representative of its APA members, exemplified by those who run it and the kinds of artists presented. Its established reputation for showcasing literary, film, music and performance by the pan-Asian Pacific American community continues with ongoing events, such as the Annual APA Arts & Heritage Festival, panel discussions, and monthly co-presentations with Asian Improv Arts and Third Thursdays.

Sign-ups and music from DJs Rich and Dai starts at 7:30 pm, with tasty snacks available and candles lit to get the audience in that open-mic mood and to grease the wheels of social interaction, fostering a get-to-know-everyone vibe. Readings begin at 8 pm, with more beats from 10 pm to 11 pm. The setting is a comfortable café with booths and the floor cleared of tables, restaurant chairs rearranged to face the un-elevated, well-lit stage.

Even though the regular schedule of Locus Open Mic suffered occasional breaks in the past, the organizers always bring it back, determined to keep it going, and most important to have fun.
