Local Bands at Outside Lands

Outside Lands, the veritable who’s who of popular music today all crammed within 3 festival days, has gone local. Read on to see which Bay Area bands you can catch on the big stage (or big screen to the side of the stage), and when.

Vetiver

Vetiver

It seems like our fair city by the bay is making quite a splash this year musically speaking. Are the bands better, is the mass audience more receptive, has Hetch Hetchy been spiked with genius drops where only musicians are susceptible? We may never know. But what we do know is this: Outside Lands is taking place this weekend in Golden Gate Park and the lineup is very visibly speckled with a vast array of Bay Area musicians. This is exciting. Below I include some highlights, personal faves, and the complete list of bands fully representing the Bay Area.

Vetiver

Andy Cabic has the voice of an angel. This is what I thought I first time I saw Vetiver at Bottom of the Hill six, or so, years ago. I had seen him playing bass in Tussle previously but had no idea how much emotion this man could carry in his voice and project through simple guitar arrangements. Back then he was accompanied by Devendra Banhart, also playing acoustic guitar, and a cellist and violin player, but he soon moved on to a more traditional rock format with a full band behind him. This year’s release The Errant Charm (Sub Pop) is a loose and wandering study of the life of the wayward traveler, a reflection on the subtleties of the full realization of ones potential. It is truly Cabic at his best. (Playing Saturday)

Tune-Yards

Merrill Garbus of Tune-Yards in blowing up. After releasing her self-recorded debut BiRd-BrAiNs in 2009, Garbus was quickly scooped up by 4AD for worldwide representation and has been killing it ever since. She just appeared on Jimmy Fallon last week where she was backed by house band The Roots (woah! also at Outside Lands). Check out the performance here. Pardon the advertisement; it is well worth the suffering. (Playing Sunday)

Ty Segall

Taking a cue from fellow buddy band Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall has taken lead of the Bay Area garage revival and unleashed his presence with a mighty burst unrivaled by any other band anywhere else in the country. Topping a number of best of lists and artists to watch alerts both last year and this year, Segall has quickly become a glimmering, sloppy, spastic, reverb-laden local sensation. See for yourself.
