The Mechanics' Institute Library
By SFS Staff (Nov 14, 2004)
A stone's throw from the Montgomery BART station, the Mechanics' Institute, one of San Francisco's most influential early city institutions and the oldest library on the West Coast, nestles in an impressive Romanesque nine-story building. The Institute's library, founded in 1855 and at its Post Street location since 1906, is as much a part of the city's development as the Gold Rush itself. More

June Events Will Kick off the Celebration
By SFS Staff (Nov 14, 2004)
From a "poetry dance" & silent auction to a rollicking street party to special evenings with renowned poets, the many festivities celebrating City Lights' 50th Birthday offer something for everyone. City Lights Books and its publishing wing have been an institution in San Francisco since the early 1950's when Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Peter Martin co-founded this first all-paperback bookstore in the United States. More

The Wild World of Wedding Books
By SFS Staff (Nov 14, 2004)
I didn't want to turn into Bridezilla and I didn't want to go into therapy. Naturally, I headed to the bookstore for help. I figured there had to be a "keep me sane from the madness" guide for the girl who wants a fun, meaningful ceremony andreception (without tiaras or Cinderella theme songs, please). There had to be a guide out there that simply detailed what you had to do, how you could to do it (while working full time and without the help of a wedding planner), while keeping your sanity and your fiancé. More

By SFS Staff (Nov 14, 2004)
If you've ever been faced with teetering bookshelves stuffed with mysteries, stacks of vintage paperbacks, or jumbled piles of historical biographies, and you hadn't a clue where to bring them to maximize their resale value, then this article is for you. San Francisco has long been a magnet for literary types and transient readers and we are blessed with as many types of used bookstores as there are genres. More

Volunteer for a Youth-Oriented Literary Nonprofit
By SFS Staff (Nov 14, 2004)
This focus on engaging youth through the power of spoken word and poetry is alive and well in the Bay, well known for both its literary arts scene and in the plethora of good causes that Bay area residents are involved in. What better way to spend a few hours than helping young people develop their own voices and stories? There are many organizations in the Bay that work with youth both inside the classroom and in after-school programs. More

Bay Area Poets Building Small Presses
By SFS Staff (Nov 15, 2004)
Some Bay Area poets paper their offices with rejection slips; others endure the cost and stigma of self-publishing to see their work in print. Meanwhile, a few local writers are building small presses that give poets hope in a market glutted with chain bookstores and mega-publishers. More

Derek Powazek doesn't think you have to be a literary giant to tell a story that's powerful, vivid and worth being heard. Enter Fray Day, now in its sixth incarnation, a storytelling event designed to get people involved and communicating about their own lives. More

Bay Area Poets Head to Minneapolis
By SFS Staff (Nov 16, 2004)
We are in the final rounds of the Battle of the Bay, a heated event that pits Bay Area slam teams against one another, giving poets who will be competing in the National Poetry Slam the chance to test out their skills for a local crowd. It's also an opportunity to raise money for the trip to Minneapolis, where 54 teams from all over North America and Europe will converge for five days of poetic competition in the annual event. More

Bringing Literature to Life
By SFS Staff (Nov 16, 2004)
The official blurb for Zoetrope: All-Story, the literary quarterly published by Francis Ford Coppola, says the magazine is "inspired by the Coppola heritage of independence and creativity." Toss in Coppola's enthusiasm for the pleasures of the palate and you've set the scene for a typical literary evening at Café Niebaum-Coppola, the director's three-year-old wine bar and Italian café in North Beach. More

Traveling Show Rescues Books from Obscurity
By SFS Staff (Nov 16, 2004)
For every literary lion whose fame has survived for centuries, scores of no-lesser talents have been consigned to obscurity by poor marketing, offbeat sensibilities or the simple vagaries of fate. This injustice will be put partly right on Friday, June 14, when The Booksmith (1644 Haight St.) hosts an Evening of Literary Revival, the second stop on a book tour of sorts which features contemporary writers reading from their favorite forgotten and out-of-print books. More
