I arrived in the Bay Area last year on a search for community and inspiration, eager to sample an area known for the strength of communities that had been lacking elsewhere. I discovered a cauldron of artistic activity everywhere I looked, including a new Asian American Open Mic that fit right in with what I was looking for -- an open and inclusive space for emerging Asian American artists to share work. More

Poetry Mission started a couple years back as one brainchild (among many) of a small group of poetry dreamers who aimed to take poetry where it's never been before. Host Harvey jokingly claims she would make a good domanitrix, and her boisterous presence tends to make one agree. She "MCs, taunts, coaxes and teases" readers, many of whom she knows personally. More

Ever since Poetry Above Paradise ended, Café International's open mic series has officially been the longest running open mic in the city. According to Robert, the head barista, it's gone on for over 15 years now and has turned into an institution. "It runs us," he says. More

This is not your typical hipster open mic, populated by hip-hoppers looking to spit a few rhymes. This is an old-school open mic, which Girl George has carved out in an odd little bar filled with Americana hodgepodge in the near vicinity of downtown Oakland. More

The welcome banner above host Jehanah Wedgwood's head reads Since 1974, The Finest Open Mike in the Bay Area -- an impressive claim that the Poetry Circle, Sacred Grounds's Wednesday night poetry event, seems to have pulled off with finesse. More

In the back room of the Long Haul Infoshop, a young MC rises up to take the mic after a lengthy DJ set. He is comfortable on the mic, alternating between rhymes and side comments to the DJ and to the few people hanging out on the couches and stairways. We're at Arise..., billed as a monthly hiphop open mic joint dedicated to anti-corporate, do-it-yourself, revolutionary culture. More

Just as within the slam circles, when you make the rounds at open mics, poets show up who have been seen reading at other venues. They've caught the craving and won't be satiated with just one podium-fix a week. The Spoken-Word Salon at Brainwash is one of the stops everyone's heard about, where they know good reception and constructive feedback avails itself. More

First Sundays at a cozy and quirky neighborhood bar quirkily called Sadie's Flying Elephant are reserved for the Q'vetsh Open Mic, San Francisco's longest running regular queer open mic. More

Poems, beer and baseball: now there's a combination that's hard to beat. The 3300 Club, familiarly known as the 33, offers up this potent mix -- plus, you get to meet down-to-earth people from all over the Bay Area. More

A collection of female songstresses, poetesses, musicians and other creative beings are gathered at The Jahva House, a popular local coffee joint around the lake, for Soul Sistah's Kitchen. A monthly gathering that's been taking place in Oakland for over a year, Soul Sistah's Kitchen bills itself as a place for both soul food and soulful grooves. More
