THE ARTIST SESSIONS presents LIAISONS: Re-Imagining Sondheim from the Piano, a landmark commissioning and concert project conceived by concert pianist Anthony de Mare, who has invited 36 of the world's foremost contemporary composers to "re-imagine" a song by legendary musical theater composer Stephen Sondheim.

ANTHONY DE MARE: LIAISONS: “The adventurous de Mare, a champion of contemporary music, merged his passion for Sondheim with his effort to expand the recital repertory. The resulting project required formidable virtuosity... de Mare’s playing was dynamic and stylish. I loved it.”
- Anthony Tommasini, The New York Times

ANTHONY DE MARE is internationally recognized as one of the world’s most versatile pianists, and one of its foremost champions of contemporary music. His provocative and engaging programs have led critics to declare he has “transformed the recital format” (New York Times), enlivening them with “a theatrical twist… more akin to a show than to a recital.” (New York Times). In the process, he has inspired the creation of dozens of new works by some of today’s most distinguished artists, especially in the speaking-singing pianist genre, which he pioneered. In addition to the 36 pieces in The Liaisons Project, he has premiered works by Frederic Rzewski, James Mobberley, Meredith Monk, Jerome Kitzke, David Rakowski, Pulitzer Prize winners David Del Tredici, Aaron Jay Kernis and Paul Moravec, jazz legend Fred Hersch, and the Tony Award winning composer Jason Robert Brown, among others.

Liaisons: Re-Imagining Sondheim from the Piano is his latest initiative. Together with producer Rachel Colbert, and with Sondheim's input and blessing, he has brought together many of today’s most highly regarded emerging and established composers to create a solo piano piece based on a Sondheim song of their own choosing. Ranging in age from 34 to 77, Liaisons features exclusive new works from Steve Reich, Daniel Bernard Roumain, Wynton Marsalis, Jake Heggie, Mason Bates, Ethan Iverson, Nico Muhly, Tania Leon and Mark Anthony Turnage, among others. De Mare's goal is to bring the compositional work of maestro Stephen Sondheim into the concert hall while showing its influence on the classical, jazz, opera, film, theater and pop worlds.
