SEE EVENT DETAILS
at The Art House Gallery & Cultural Center (see times)
The Mystic Boxing Commission presents Legacy of Rebellion, the SF Bay Area installment of the National Beat Poetry Festival, a series of events in every state in the U.S. to honor and celebrate the Beat Generation. The Bay Area fête features an amazing group of writers and performers from three generations. Representing The Beats, we have Jerry Kamstra, rebel, felon, educator, and author of Weed and The Frisco Kid, and Jami Cassady Ratto, daughter of Neal Cassady and founder of the Neal Cassady Estate. Representing the Baby Beats, we have Clive Matson, protégé of Herbert Huncke and author of many books including Mainline to the Heart and the Chalcedony series, and Jessica Loos, poet, performer, former member of The Living Theater, and North Beach icon. Finally, representing the Grandbaby Beats, we have Daniel Yaryan, follower of Brother Antoninus and founder of Sparring with Beatnik Ghosts, and Jennifer Barone, performer extraordinaire and co-founder of the long-running Word Party series.

The evening will be hosted by Richard Loranger (long-time Beat aficionado) and Gerald Nicosia (biographer of Jack and Jan Kerouac, and friend to many Beats). Please come by and help us to celebrate this electric generation, and bring a short Beat poem to read, in case we have time.

Jerry Kamstra was born in a mining camp in a shack buried under thirty-five feet of snow. His father, a Dutch immigrant, made his living as a hard-rock miner. His mother was the daughter of a fruit tramp, Nettie Cody, a distant relative of Buffalo Bill Cody. By the time he was fourteen, Jerry had broken his arm eight times and had read every book in the Colton Public Library. Since then, he has worked as an abalone and salmon fisherman, construction worker, trucker and marijuana smuggler. Kamstra is the well-known author of the top-selling books Weed: Adventures Of A Dope Smuggler and The Frisco Kid, among many other literary achievements as a poet, editor and publisher. He is currently a designer, artist, lecturer and educator living in Santa Cruz, CA.

Jami Cassady is the middle child of Neal and Carolyn Cassady. She and her husband of 40 years have been diligently trying to keep the legacy of Neal alive..... the beat inspiration of the man and the myth. Born in San Francisco, she grew up knowing her father as both a hardworking and loving dad, and also watched him transform the world of literature from the Beats to the Pranksters. She is now enjoying retirement and likes to participate in events and festivals that promote writers and poets. Jami has one daughter and 2 grandchildren and lives in Capitola.

Clive Matson (MFA Columbia University) is a walking example of the legacy of the Beat Generation. His second father was the proto-Beat Herbert Huncke, who gave the Beats their name. Huncke taught Clive everything from how to buy a pair of pants and how to talk to a person in New York City to how to deal with a heroin bust. Clive attributes his writing in the flow of passionate intensity that runs through us all to the Beats and to his study of McClure, Ginsberg, di Prima, John Wieners, and Alden van Buskirk. Amazingly, Clive's seventh book, Squish Boots (2002), was placed in Wieners' coffin. Visit Clive at https://www.matsonpoet.com

Jessica Loos is a performer and writer who has worked with the Living Theater and performed regularly at Tribes Gallery in New York. She is also uniquely placed in the history of North Beach poetry. Her vocalizations utilize improvised poetry and sound movement.

Mystic Boxing Commissioner Daniel Yaryan is:
1.) A devout disciple of both the late poet William Everson and his favorite living Beat novelist Jerry Kamstra.
2.) Grandson of Big Ray Yaryan (founder of the original Ghost Riders Motorcycle Club,1938)
3.) A speculative, phantasmagoric poet of Beat ilk.
4.) Founder of Sparring With Beatnik Ghosts
5.) Santa Cruzan and father of Hannah and Andy Yaryan

Jennifer Barone is the author of three books of poetry, her most recent titled Saporoso - poems of Italian food & love, and founder of the long-running WordParty poetry & jazz night in San Francisco and NY. She has been a featured poet at the SF Public Library, Red Poppy Art House, SF MoMa, DeYoung, The Beat Museum and many local poetry readings. She was a winner of the 2007 and 2012 SF Public Library Poets Eleven contest for North Beach where she resides. Visit thewordparty.com for more info.
