La Plebe: La Plebe is and will always be one of the best local bands in the Bay. A punk spirit, an activist attitude, iconic artwork, and lyrics in English and Spanish and, of course, horns, have cemented this reputation since 2001. Walking through the mission in those days, or really up until a few years ago, you wouldn't be very surprised to see La Plebe set up guerilla style, blasting puro rock about social issues at maximum volume outside of 24th street BART. Or to see them playing a show in a dank basement in Chinatown. Or to meet them while stuck in traffic on the bay bridge, as a mohawked fella jumps out of the van and runs to the next car over to hand out stickers. These guys are everywhere, spreading joy through punk. Lupe, Alberto, Pags, Antonio, and Mark: sticking it out in an ever changing environment over more than a dozen years, just so we can experience the otherworldly feeling of punk with horns. The band has stayed together and toured whenever possible, bringing this joy to other parts of the West Coast and the world. Even the aftermath of the fall of communism, cold war, and history of strife didn't stop them from touring the Balkans -- somewhere that never crosses the minds of most bands. But most bands aren't as radical as La Plebe. High energy, fast, loud, and always fun, La Plebe's raucous live show is part of what makes San Francisco a special music scene. Skank, dance, or just head bang -- either way you'll lose yourself in the music and message of La Plebe.
