Kon & Nick Monaco

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Monarch and Hey Young World team up on Thursday, September 18th to present Kon (BBE | Soul Clap Records) and Nick Monaco! This will be Kon's first SF appearance of the year and Nick Monaco celebrates his new release, Mating Call, out on Soul Clap Records September 8th.

Kon is a bottomless pit of musical know-how who has been digging deep in crates since 1976 and spinning since 1985. One half of Kon & Amir, the duo who released acclaimed music on BBE Records, Kon is known for his magical edits of forgotten classics, which prompted Gilles Peterson to name him “Edit/rework King”, and feature him prominently on his BBC Radio shows.

A firm festival favourite thanks to his diverse musical selections, Kon has also spread his gospel to the masses through critically heralded releases on labels such as Basic Fingers, Soul Clap Records, and Hands of Time. Kon’s recent remix of Medlar’s standout Tides on Wolf Music further enhanced his already impressive credentials. Beyond collecting vinyl and re-editing classics, Kon has been part of Boston’s Hip-Hop community for nearly 30 years, and has preserved the development of it as a true culturist.

Kon’s edits have received massive support from taste makers such as Jazzanova, Derrick Carter, Jacques Renault, Danny Krivit, Soul Clap, Dimitri From Paris, King Britt, John Morales, and Gilles Peterson to name a few. Last summer Kon’s “All About Youx” EP dropped on the hugely influential Soul Clap Record label. The EP garnered stellar reviews and was selected as Mixmag’s EP of the month, and was soon followed up by the release of his debut solo album, which was just as well received. “I think (he was) very much ahead of the curve” has said Gilles Peterson in the past, whilst Soul Clap have also claimed “Kon is the best Disco/Funk/Soul/Boogie DJ in the world!” Whoever you are, you can’t argue with that.

In a recent interview with Magnetic Magazine, Nick Monaco describes the overall vibe of the Hey Young World parties:

Why are the Hey Young World the best parties around? Any insight you might be able to give us on the secrets to that special sauce?

"It has been going on since January so it is pretty new. It is the first time I have thrown a party. My intention with the Hey Young World party is pretty simple, just me and a friend, not just me trying to book someone to fill up the club. It just so happens that my friends are DJs who inspire me.

It helps to have control over the whole night, play a little funk, reggae, and it loosens people up. I picked this up with Soul Clap opening up for them every single night. It taught me how to be a really good opening DJ to set a tone, and it is really important for the opening to DJ, from when you are walking in to set a vibe. The idea of bringing younger people into the fold of older music is my intent to usher in a new generation in San Francisco especially."
