The George Krevsky Gallery is proud to present Ken Kalman: Points of Interest. His second solo exhibition at the George Krevsky Gallery features sculptures in a range of mediums including, aluminum sheet or copper plate with hand-cast details, historical maps, and childhood, “Dick and Jane” books. Revealing both the vision of the artist, and the skill of the craftsperson, Kalman will be present at the Opening Reception on Saturday, September 21st from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., and available for interviews prior to that by contacting the gallery.
Kalman invites us to explore what has made an impact on him and what continues to resonate. His subjects relate to world geography, history, and politics, cultural events and childhood stories. He states, “Not unlike those occasional roadside signs that invite you to an important but often little known bit of history or geography, this work marks those places, some little known, where my own attention has come to rest.” The Artist is inspired by childhood stories and fantasies, and years of mastering handmade balsa wood airplanes and ships, obsessed by the most precious coins and stamps to be found, and by the creatures that have inhabited his life and memory.
A Detroit native, Kalman studied and worked in Boston and Albuquerque before settling in the Bay Area more than 20 years ago. He holds an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of New Mexico.
Kalman’s artwork has appeared in museum exhibitions at Carlsbad (NM) Fine Arts Museum, Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, San Francisco’s Jewish Community Museum and Museum of Craft and Folk Art, Seattle Art Center, Sonoma Valley Museum of Art, Katonah Museum of Art in Westchester County, New York.
His sculptures are included in corporate collections at Abbott Laboratories, Hewlett-Packard, Kaiser Permanente, Milwaukee Bucks (NBA), Nestle’s Inc., Tiffany and Company, and the U.S. Department of State. Among the numerous public commissions are, “Salamander,” Artech Building, Berkeley; “Tortoise” and “Hippopotamus with Baby”, Danielle Steele, Stinson Beach; “Oceana,” Patrick Kennedy, UC Storage Building, Berkeley, and “Cello and Violin,” Crowden School of Music, Berkeley.
In addition, Kalman has exhibited with Claudia Chapline Gallery in Stinson Beach, Virginia Breir and Vorpal Galleries in San Francico, and OK Harris in New York. He is currently represented by the George Krevsky Gallery where he has been showing since 2005.
