The Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series (VAS) provides a forum for engagement and dialogue with major figures in international contemporary art and culture. Through lectures, screenings, and performances, the series creates intimate connections between SFAI and the public, and invites individuals to contribute to the spirit of curiosity that drives the SFAI community.
SFAI Social Hour: Join the SFAI community for informal social gatherings to each VAS lecture. SFAI Café, 6-7pm
Karen Finley (MFA, 1981) is a performance artist notorious for her dramatic role in Jesse Helms’ breakdown on the Senate _oor, which ignited the Culture Wars. Even as Finley’s wedge in the puritanical hypocrisy of American life continues to echo today, she will revisit her seminal book Shock Treatment (1990) and share how she “found the joy” in art after her 1998 lawsuit against the NEA. Finley’s recent work includes Broken Negative, where she reframes her infamous chocolate performance; and Sext Me if You Can, a collection of sext-inspired portraits.
