Kafana Balkan

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Come celebrate the 9 year anniversary of the Bay’s most bumpin’ Balkan party, KAFANA BALKAN, Opa!

Saturday February 6th, 2016, 9pm
At the Rickshaw Stop
155 Fell at Van Ness

This Kafana Balkan features:
Inspector Gadje Balkan Brass joined by Macedonian-Roma clarinet maestro Ismail Lumanovski, Elizabeth Strong (Turkish-Romani-Bellydance) and Dj Željko.

Ismail Lumanovski reunites with Inspector Gadje at Kafana Balkan! This ambitious collaboration debuted in February 2015 in Oakland, CA inspiring an all-night sweat-soaked dance party (for those who didn’t make it, see what you missed here https://www.youtube.com/watch).

About the featured artist: Ismail Lumanovski, who performs internationally and leads the New York Gypsy All-Stars, is perhaps (probably) the first Roma clarinet player to graduate from the Juilliard School of Music in New York. His sui generis mastery of Western classical and Eastern folk music has elevated both genres to new heights, and indeed the clarinet to new octaves.

About the hosting band: Inspector Gadje brings a big sound to the beautiful and bumpin' brass band music of the Balkans. With 14 musicians sharing the stage, Inspector Gadje is an acoustic dance machine that makes the party move! A "... RIP ROARING MAD BALKAN BRASS BEDLAM" (KPFA'S Stephen Kent, “Music of the World”) and an "instant party atmosphere” (The SF Chronicle).

About the dancer: Elizabeth Strong
Elizabeth Strong is a life long dancer, raised in the folk communities of California, where she was exposed to music and dance of the Balkans and Middle East from a young age. In addition to over a decade of study in the Bay Area, She has traveled and studied dance ethnology in Turkey and Egypt, the first student of Reyhan Tuzsuz in Istanbul, and student of Sahra Saeeda in Egyptian dance and culture.

About the presenters: Kafana Balkan was the first ongoing Balkan dance party in San Francisco and is the only one of its kind organized by DJ Željko Petković in the Bay Area. Željko hails from Serbia by way of Frankfurt, and, lucky for us, he now calls San Francisco home. DJ Željko has discriminating taste, a seemingly endless collection of great Balkan albums, and love and joy for his music, a crowd-pleasing, danceable Balkan brass sound. Željko promotes Balkan music and culture by producing Kafana Balkan roughly four times a year. Since February 2015, he’s joined by Marco Peris Coppola, Creative Co Strategist and Co Booker, who has helped Kafana Balkan grow and evolve.

DJ Željko Kafana Balkan Mastermind is credited with single handedly dragging the amazing Jolly Raukus Balkan Music of his homeland out of the old folks home (here in San Francisco) and into the streets where people can be found dancing laughing and have a great time. His fantastic sensibility and vision for curating events reflect his great love of the musical traditions of Serbia, Turkey, Bulgaria, Croatia......well, and The Balkans in general (and sometimes a touch of swirling Arabic sounds). You will not hear any four on the floor Turbo Folk music when you come to Kafana Balkan - no electronic thump watered down for appeal to younger generations. You will hear good ol acoustic, raukus brass. Picture this... you will be smiling, enjoying the odd metered bliss that is Balkan music and and your feet will be stomping the floor even if you don't know where the down beat is! who cares, let the music take you away!

There will be Rakija -delectible Serbian plum brandy. Warning: :drink at your own risk:!
