This edition of Kafana Balkan is featuring locally loved Inspector Gadje Balkan Brass Band, Homegrown Internationally acclaimed Belly dance stars Jill Parker and Elizabeth Strong with Little Egypt, and Kafana Balkan Mastermind DJ Željko.
For eight years Serbian DJ Željko Petkovic has produced Kafana Balkan, a seasonal party that SF Weekly called, the "Best Crazed... Brass Band Dance Party in SF." For the eastern European communities that come out, it’s a little bit of home, and for all it’s one of the Bay’s best parties. Sold out shows, sweat soaked dancers, home-made gibanica and burek (savory Balkan pastries) rakija, bumpin’ Balkan dj sets, bellydance, and brass bands playing through the crowds and onto the stage . . . JILL PARKER is an internationally renowned performer and teacher. She is known for her big smile and even bigger heart! She's an original member of Fat Chance Belly Dance, the founder of Ultra Gypsy, and director of the Foxglove Sweethearts. When she is in the bay area she can be seen gracing the stage of Kafana Balkan with her infectious love for Arabic and Balkan music and dance. She teaches weekly classes at ODC Commons, Dance Mission (SF) and Spring Fall Dance Studio (Berkeley). jillparkerbellydance.com

ELIZABETH STRONG is a life long dancer, raised in the folk communities of California, where she was exposed to music and dance of the Balkans and Middle East from a young age. In addition to over a decade of study in the Bay Area, She has traveled and studied dance ethnology in Turkey and Egypt, the first student of Reyhan Tuzsuz in Istanbul, and student of Sahra Saeeda in Egyptian dance and culture.
