For eight years Serbian DJ Zeljko has produced Kafana Balkan, a seasonal party that SF Weekly called, the "Best Crazed... Brass Band Dance Party in SF." For the eastern European communities that come out, it’s a little bit of home, and for all it’s one of the Bay’s best parties. Sold out shows, sweat soaked dancers, home-made gibanica and burek (savory Balkan pastries) rakija, bumpin’ Balkan dj sets, bellydance, and brass bands playing through the crowds and onto the stage . . . ISMAEL LUMANOVSKI, who performs internationally and leads the New York Gypsy Allstars, is perhaps the first Roma clarinet player to graduate from the Juilliard School of Music in New York. His sui generis mastery of Western classical and Eastern folk music have elevated both musics to new heights, and indeed to new octaves in the clarinet.
Lumanovski will join Inspector Gadje in a new cross country and cross-cultural collaboration. This continues Inspector Gadje’s tradition of learning from master Eastern European musicians, a practice going back to 2010 when the band began through a collaboration with the Voice of Roma, a non-profit that supports Romani cultural causes world-wide.
JILL PARKER is an internationally renowned performer and teacher. She is known for her big smile and even bigger heart! She's an original member of Fat Chance Belly Dance, the founder of Ultra Gypsy, and director of the Foxglove Sweethearts. When she is in the bay area she can be seen gracing the stage of Kafana Balkan with her infectious love for Arabic and Balkan music and dance.
