Jud Bergeron: From Analog to Digital and Back

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at K. Imperial Fine Art (see times)
K. Imperial Fine Art is pleased to present "From Analog to Digital and Back", a solo show of new work by Jud Bergeron.

Jud Bergeron will present new sculpture created from paper, bronze and resin. This work examines how we see and perceive form by exploring the digital vs. the physical processes and the inherent complications that each process dictates.

Each work is created by hand through a process of cutting and fitting paper to create sculpture. They are meditations on form created through a stream of consciousness process. He uses color in the paper pieces as a device to create perception of perfection. The eye sees the color and the form and fills in the mistakes.

Once the pieces are created in the physical world (analog) they are scanned and 3D models are created through a computer (digital) to remove all memory of the 'hand'. At this point they are 2D representations in their most pure, perfect form. Then the works are 3D printed where the perfection is blurred during the printing process.

Upon re-entry to the physical world in a printed version the human hand is present again. Each piece is sanded to remove the digital fingerprint, although nearly impossible to remove it entirely. Molds are then made and the lost wax process comes into play for bronze casting, a process that hasn't changed in 5000 years – all hand done and inherently imperfect.

Through this very laborious process, his aim is to examine the alchemic transformation from analog to digital and back and explore how the influence of new technology might change his work.

Jud Bergeron has exhibited nationally with solo shows in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas and San Francisco and has been commissioned for many large scale public works throughout the United States. He currently lives and works in San Francisco.

"From Analog to Digital and Back" will be on view May 5 – 28, 2016 with a reception for the artist Thursday, May 5th 5:30 – 7:30pm.
