PHOTO is pleased to announce JOURNEYS, an exhibition of prints made by Kate Jordahl, Irene Imfeld, and Jack Fulton. Kate Jordahl’s Walking with Kandinsky, Irene Imfeld’s Web of Uncertainty, and Jack Fulton’s A Circumnavigation in Three Hours are each a complete presentation of the maker's individual journey. Together they create a larger conversation about everyone's journey through time.

The three artists depict three journeys—symbolic, existential, and literal. Inspired by Kandinsky’s writing, Kate Jordahl set off on a pilgrimage to discover the spirit of art. Irene Imfeld looked for meaning in the common visible world and found it up in the air. Jack Fulton explored curious and colorful sights close to home.

Walking with Kandinsky is the first in a series of three books exploring the mysterious paths of creativity. Through pictures and text, Kate Jordahl examines the personal journey of creation, the inspiration of mentors and the collaborative process, focusing on creative blocks and breakthroughs. Both silver gelatin prints and hand-bound books will be shown in the gallery.

Web of Uncertainty is the result of Irene Imfeld spending several years simply considering the meaning of our surroundings. She peered into windows and approached dark doorways to get this series of 58 images. The sequence of images forms a characterization of a time of personal inquiry. The entire series will be shown in miniature, with larger prints available.

Jack Fulton's A Circumnavigation in Three Hours is a piece in the vast work of this lifelong photographer. Working with minimal restraints--three hours, no freeways--he explored the shoreline around San Pablo Bay. We've chosen this group of vertical images to embody his act of standing and looking.

In the artworks featured, the artists used ordinary photographic materials. Jordahl continues with her expertise in traditional darkroom printing. Imfeld and Fulton both work in digital processing and printing.

Kate Jordahl's Walking with Kandinsky, as well as the two other books in the set, uses traditional bookbinding methods in an innovative and unexpected arrangement, giving viewers the option of combining images in several ways. These must be seen in person to experience these superb handmade artworks.

Irene Imfeld has produced a print-on-demand book of Web of Uncertainty. While much more common than Kate's hand-crafted objects, the book form is a good way to show the entire series in a slow, expressive sequence. The length and repetitious nature of the images reinforce the lack of direction portrayed by the imagery, which was influenced by the writings of W.G. Sebald. Web of Uncertainty depicts waymarks Imfeld encountered in searching for a larger and deeper view.

Jack Fulton is an extremely productive photographer and, in this show, he demonstrates his fluidity with the photographic process. This series of colorful prints is part of what he was able to find on a self-assignment to produce interesting photographs using an abstruse idea or plan. Over the years this has proved to be an endeavor unfolding pleasantly surprising results which are always fresh and contemporary.

About the Artists:

Kate Jordahl is a Professor of Photography at Foothill College, and co-director of PhotoCentral in Hayward. She photographs places where spirit of the earth and the human spirit come together. Her work is in numerous collections including the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.

Irene Imfeld is an independent artist who has worked with digital printing for over ten years. Her work has been shown in solo exhibits at the Bolinas Museum and at the Fresno Art Museum, and is in public and private collections. She recently won the Grand Prize in Fauna, PhotoAlliance's competition judged by William Wegman.

Jack Fulton retired in 2013 as Professor Emeritus at the San Francisco Art Institute. He chaired the photography department approximately half the time since joining it in 1969. He also taught at UC Santa Cruz as Lecturer since 1978, and has taught and led workshops throughout the United States, including Alaska, and Europe. His award-winning prints are in many collections and publications.
