Radin wrote or co-wrote all 12 tracks on the album, which was produced by Kevin Augunas (Cold War Kids, The Vandals, and Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros) and features guest performances from legendary players such as Benmont Tench (Tom Petty), Jim Keltner (George Harrison, John Lennon, Herbie Hancock), Roger Joseph Manning Jr. (Fiona Apple, Beck), string arranger Jimmy Haskell and more. The album was recorded at the storied Studio City studios, the once-ramshackle space that hosted Nirvana’s Nevermind sessions. They captured single takes on analog tape, to give the work a more organic feel.
Radin’s childhood history of ear problems prevented him from ever swimming underwater. He was penning Underwater at his home in Los Angeles in near seclusion when one day, he awoke to the realization that there was inspiration in the Pacific. So he bought state-of-the-art earplugs and took the plunge. “I never realized the silence that could occur when you go underwater,” he says. “That was pretty amazing.”
He essentially wrote the title track while submerged, capturing the sensation of freedom. That hope continues to trickle through the album in tracks such as the loving “Tomorrow’s Gonna Be Better,” the sweeping “Anywhere Your Love Goes” and the gently ambling “Let It Go” (about that time he jumped in his friend’s convertible and high-tailed it up the Coast).
