Description
Joe Rees produced two striking and disparate bodies of work in the 1970s and 1980s and both will be on view at Steven Wolf Fine Arts.

Rees and the gallery have recreated a selection of his neon sculpture, almost all of which was destroyed in the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, and not seen since that time. Eerie representations of chairs and tables, crucifixes and eye-glasses, the neon sculptures earned Rees a reputation for invention and craftsmanship and the San Francisco Art Association’s Adaline Kent Award in 1980.

As the founder of Target Video, Rees was at the center of the punk rock scene in San Francisco, and he shot a huge archive of video footage. Iggy Pop, Devo, The Germs, The Cramps and so many other bands got caught in his web. Rees will screen select videos from his collection, which has been seen recently at The Getty Museum, The
Pacific Film Archive and the San Francisco Public Library.
