Description
Bay Area Pop Group OONA Turned International Pop Stars Overnight, Coming to San Francisco March 19th!
OONA'S single “Tore My Heart" peaked at #35 on iTunes Pop Downloads Chart and #54 on iTunes Overall Downloads

"...is a musical elixir with belting vocals somewhere between Tori Amos and Janis Joplin, with abstract sparky dance moves like Mars Volta and a pinch of emcee." -Rosalyn Lee, Performer Magazine

"Oakland's Oona, both the band and the band's singer, were born at the top of their game. They've got the songs, the chops, the showmanship, and the soul to be ranked with the best of the best." - Daniel Hooper, DJ, KUSF

OONA is the musical brainchild of Dave Tweedie and Oona Garthwaite. Born in 2006 of an impromptu and sparse jam session (Dave on drums, Oona singing), Dave produced a few of Oona’s songs, and when they parted ways, Oona recruited some musicians from Craigslist to bring these tunes to the San Francisco club scene.

A few months later, Dave had a dream, in which he heard Oona playing at an art gallery. He called her up, and invited her to work on some more tracks. Lo and behold, he joined the band as drummer and musical director.

OONA's nationwide success began when Oona was interviewed and featured on MTV2 for being nominated "Best Breakout Bay Area Artist", on MTV2's Bay Area Week in August 2009.

On December 1, 2009, OONA’s song "Tore My Heart" was featured on Fox's "So You Think You Can Dance" in a routine choreographed by Sonya Tayeh and performed by Ellenore Scott and Jakob Karr. In the days following, OONA climbed the iTunes charts, peaking at #35 on the Top Pop Downloads, and #54 Top Downloads - a mighty accomplishment for any unsigned artist. The group began receiving calls from major record labels. Fans all over the internet were writing on message boards trying to locate the song they heard on "SYTYCD" and buy it. OONA's song "Tore My Heart" became a hit over night. The attention helped OONA to sell out San Francisco's Bottom of the Hill and Red Devil Lounge. The "Tore My Heart" single has gone on to sell over 25,000 downloads.

Singer Oona Garthwaite was born in California to a musical family, niece of Terry Garthwaite and daughter of David Garthwaite, founding members of the Berkeley based band Joy of Cooking. Oona considers her aunt and her father to be her own musical mentors and with good reason. The Joy of Cooking spent time on the charts in the early 70's while signed to Capitol Records before disbanding after releasing three studio albums. Musical talent runs deep in the Garthwaite family, and it has most definitely been passed along to Oona.

Oona's co-writing partner, Oakland-based producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Dave Tweedie, is a veteran of the Bay Area music scene. As an in-demand drummer, Dave Tweedie became a fixture of the San Francisco music scene, playing with the likes of Angelo Moore and Norwood Fisher of Fishbone, David Immergluck of The Counting Crows, Karl Perazzo of Santana, Les Claypool of Primus, Eric Martin of Mr. Big, Michael Manring and Alex Skolnick. In addition to his work with OONA, Dave Tweedie, along with long-time collaborator Stephen Bradley (No Doubt, Green Day, Gwen Stefani, Smashing Pumpkins) and up-and-comer Bijou, are the band Jet Stream, a pop/dance/rap group that has found commercial success in DirecTV ads, and various TV placements such as MTV's Paris Hilton's New BFF.

To add to the group's list of achievements, Oona's collaboration with Jet Stream, a song called "Remote Control", aired on the Season Premiere of the CW's 2010 Show, Life Unexpected. Oona offers the song as a free download for fans through her website,oonamusic.com

In the world of pop music, where lip-syncing and backing tracks are all but ubiquitous, OONA is the authentic article: great musicianship, a truly unique voice and a raw, vibrant stage presence, delivering well-crafted songs and smart lyrics with passion and intent every time. Don’t sleep on it.
