Un-gentrified indie-jazz influenced by folk, rock, R&B, and funk. The Joe Baer Magnant Group formed in 2013 with Michael Reed on drums, Chris Lujan on bass, Tony Capriccio on electric piano, and Joe Baer Magnant on guitar. Their style is reminiscent of late '60s fusion, exemplified by a version of Steve Swallow's "General Mojo's Well Laid Plan" from the 1967 Gary Burton album "Duster." Source recordings are completely lo-fi, using a high-end four-track cassette recorder. Just like Magnant's compositions, however, the vintage-sounding foundations are enhanced with modern adjustments. Six of the eight tracks are original compositions and, along with the nod to Burton's pioneering fusion sound, a cover of Tom Waits' "Swordfishtrombones" highlights the JBM Group's love for alternative music.
