Illusion of Depth

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at Desta Gallery (see times)
Desta Galley presents Illusion of Depth featuring artwork by renowned painter Fritz Rauh and sculptor Gary Marsh. The public is invited to a meet and greet artist reception on Friday, September 4th from 6pm - 8pm. Desta’s renowned hand-blended tea infused cocktails, champagne and light appetizers will be served.

The work of Fritz Rauh uniquely combines the organic forms and palette of Art Nouveau and the kinetic effects of color as explored by the “optical” painters. Rauh fills his surface with small amoeba-like single-color units, closely packed on a sometimes contrasting, sometimes harmonizing ground in such a way that foreground and background become interchangeable. Separating the two colors are narrow spaces, either bare canvas or a third color, which assume great importance in the overall composition by intensifying the color relationships, activating the negative and positive forms, and helping to bind masses of units into larger forms. The vigorously vacillating surface, heightened frequently by flat color areas defining the limits of the canvas, evokes, in jewel-like or somber tones, the beauty of the micro-organic world of the scientist.

Fritz Rauh’s artwork has been shown in Bay Area galleries and in galleries all over the world such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Oakland Art Museum, Galerie B. Haasner Gallery, Wiesbaden, Germany; Gallery Schreiner, Basel, Switzerland; and at the International Art Show Expo, Osaka, Japan. German artist Fritz Rauh lived in San Anselmo, CA and passed away in 2011.

Gary Marsh’s passion is the exploration and study of form, intertwining shapes found in nature with those of man’s architectural influence. In other terms, combining forms unscathed by man’s hands with forms created entirely by man’s hands. Heavily influenced and inspired by all living things, the intent of Gary’s work is to relay the balance required between the human race and nature, the connection and the responsibility to protect the world we have the privilege to co-inhabit. Whether literal or interpretive, Gary strives to instill a breath of life or a personality into each work. Observing a viewer’s interaction with his sculpture inspires and feeds his creative process. Currently his work explores two avenues; the absence of color with the focus on form, painted in pure white. In contrast, he is working with cold finishes, the painting of clay, in a multilayered and subtractive manner, digging beneath the surface as if exploring the sculptures past.

Marin resident Gary Marsh has shown nationally for over 40 years. These exhibitions have included the Crocker-Kingsley Exhibition in Sacramento, CA; the Carnegie Mellon Institute in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Artisans in Mill Valley, CA and Art Prospect in La Jolla, CA.

Artist reception is FREE and open to the public. For more information visit https://www.destagallery.com or call 415- 524-8932.
