Humanities West presents Vienna on the Verge: 1890-1918, a two-day program of lectures, discussions, and musical performance exploring the tumultuous cultural life of Vienna at the end of the 19th century, as it became the center of emerging modernism in philosophy, architecture, art, literature, and music.

The program features talks on the cultural conflicts and contrasts of Late Imperial Vienna, the rise of literary modernism, the scandalous art of Klimt and Kokoshka, innovations in Viennese architecture, and the impact of social change on everyday life, along with a special musical lecture/performance featuring chamber music by Johannes Brahms, Richard Strauss, Anton Webern, and Oscar Straus.

A panel discussion with the presenters will follow.
Presenters include Gary Cohen (U of Minnesota Twin Cities), Bruce Lamott (Philharmonia Baroque), David Luft (Oregon State U), Lisa Silverman (U of Wisconsin Milwaukee), Kayleen Asbo (SF Conservatory of Music), and Mitchell Schwarzer (California College of the Arts)
