Here is a guide to my favorite 12 eco-friendly gifts, there is some shipping involved but one can also carbon offset their holiday travel/shipping. Lots of these items are under $100, so it won’t break your piggy bank. More

All the Comforts of Home
By Jialin Luh (Jun 22, 2007)
No two visits to Aldea, a hip home furnishings store in the Mission, are apt to be the same. Well, there may be one thing: you are bound to find something that tickles your fancy and may leave the sensory-rich experience with an inspiration for redesigning your home. Store proprietor Johanna Bialkin moved to San Francisco from New York inspired by a project where interior designers and architects redesigned an apartment every six months, and the results are fresh and dazzling. More

Bring a Bit of Spring Indoors
By Michelle Sieling (Apr 5, 2007)
Along with colored eggs, rabbits and yellow marshmallow Peeps, “colorful” makes me think of Easter and the return of spring. Aside from the Peeps, all of those things symbolize the ideas of fertility, abundance and renewal associated with the season. Furthermore, fresh floral arrangements brighten your home and give one the feeling of hope associated with new beginnings. More

Let the Summer Cookouts Begin
By Gloria Tai (Aug 19, 2004)
Once that familiar San Francisco fog rolls in, you can't help but think that Bay Area Indian summers are just around the corner. And then the visions of backyard, rooftop, and beachside cookouts come to mind. The timing couldn't be better to get into gear and shop for those wonderful gadgets and accessories for dining al fresco. Large chain stores like Crate and Barrel and Pottery Barn are practically giving away outdoor-themed merchandise in order to make room for the fall back-to-school season. Bay Area residents are just beginning to dust off those beach chairs and picnic blankets... More

Pet Pleasing Purchases
By Michelle Sieling (Jul 22, 2005)
I will admit with no shame that I spoil Guinevere, my Staffordshire Bull Terrier. For her 10th birthday last year, I bought her an ox-blood red leather collar with silver stars and a black leather leash to replace the old nylon ones she had been sporting for years. For Christmas, I gave her a furry squeaky toy in the shape of a fox that she managed to rip up in about two weeks. I also feed her organic dry dog food and indulge her addiction to what I call 'dog crack', otherwise known as Greenies chew treats. More

A Flower Design Shop Branches Out
By grace chen (Sep 11, 2009)
Over the years Hayes Valley’s seedy scene of drugs and crime has eroded. In the last decade or so it has sprouted into a bustling enclave of trendy boutiques, chic salons, sunny sidewalk cafés and hip restaurants that line not only its main thoroughfare, Hayes Street, but also its side alleys. The latest addition to take root is BirchMore

Valentine's Gifts
By SFS Staff (Feb 21, 2003)
The one time I had a boyfriend on Valentine's Day, he gave me a heart-shaped box filled with those candy hearts stamped with little messages, and on the outside, the $1.99 price tag was still stuck on. You might think that this must have been a ten-year-old boyfriend from my childhood days, but no, it was just a few years ago. Since my boyfriend was foreign, he probably had a different idea of standard American practice for the holiday, but he also had no money and was cheap to boot. More

Vibrant Vintage
By Michelle Sieling (Dec 9, 2005)
There's something meditative about spending a rainy afternoon browsing through a vintage shop. I often catch myself staring at an old coffee cup or faded photograph for five or ten minutes, lost in the recollection of some childhood visit to my grandmother's house or imagining what life was like for whoever owned the artifact before. More

Resources for your urban refuge San Francisco
By Michelle Sieling (Jun 3, 2005)
In a city shrouded in fog for most of the year, rare sunny days bring San Franciscans outdoors in droves. Kicking back in your yard or on a back porch is a great way to escape the heat and noise of the dirty city streets. And though lounging in a backyard is lovely, being faced with tall weeds or a sad barren porch may drive you back inside onto your couch. Fortunately for San Franciscans, Floorcraft Garden Center and Guerrero Street Gardens have the tools, plants and experienced staff with the know-how to get your outside oasis ready for your enjoyment. More

Gifting, the age-old practice of giving stuff to others, is a year-round sport as the calendar is littered with various holidays and special occasions that require you to get out and spend.
