Friends of Peralta Hacienda Historical Park and artist and writer Linda Norton will host an art and education workshop as part of Home & Away: Oakland, California's Prisons, and the Geography of the Heart, an exhibit that documents the effects of mass incarceration on Fruitvale's community in Oakland.
California has one of the largest prison systems in the world. Across the U. S., almost two million people are currently locked up. More than 70 percent of the imprisoned population are people of color.
What does the rise in incarceration do to our communities and families? How can we document the local impact of "The New Jim Crow," and communicate and heal?
