Description
Riekena's non-representational abstractions are an attempt to communicate with the viewer on a very direct, non-analytical level, more similar to the effect of music than that of highly conceptual art. Variously labeled as tranquil, explosive, urban, organic, vaginal and spermy (sometimes all in reference to the same piece), Riekena uses bold color schemes and very active shapes and compositions to create movement and plasticity within the picture plane, catching and then holding the viewer's eye in the hopes of momentarily pulling them away from their day to day existence and into a receptive, experiential state. "I want the left brain to turn off for a minute," Riekena says.
