Hear This! Explores the Artistic Power and Resonance of Sound

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at Palo Alto Art Center (see times)
What is the sound of art? The Palo Alto Art Center will attempt to answer that compelling question through its upcoming exhibition, Hear This!, Jan. 17-April 12 at the Palo Alto Art Center, 1313 Newell Road, Palo Alto, Calif.

The free exhibition will present works by five contemporary artists who employ the power of sound in artworks that explore perception, the passage of time, and nostalgia. Visitors will be immersed in sonic experiences by artists such as Kate Lee Short, who creates monumental sculptures comprised of stacks of salvaged speakers, and Chris Duncan, who invites visitors to make sounds on his door-sized string instrument.

Other artists participating in the exhibition include: Julianne Swartz of New York, who will exhibit a tapestry of electric wire and speakers that emit different human sounds; Mark Malberg, whose high-tech, hand-built, sensor-activated mobiles jerk, click, and chirp responsively, raising questions about the relationship between humans and machines; and Christian Marclay, whose video, Looking for Love, features Marclay repeatedly raising and dropping the needle of a record player, searching for the moment when a vocalist sings the word “love.”

The exhibition is free to the public and will take place from Jan. 17-April 12, at the Palo Alto Art Center, 1313 Newell Road, Palo Alto, Calif. A special opening celebration with the artists will be held on Jan. 23, 7-10 p.m., at the Art Center. More information may be found at https://www.cityofpaloalto.org/artcenter.
