San Francisco’s annual folk freakout Hardly Strictly Bluegrass returns Friday with three days of free music that typically draws more than half a million people to Golden Gate Park.

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass is held every year at San Francisco’s Speedway Meadow in Golden Gate Park, welcoming all kinds of alternative acts, dozens of rock, country, bluegrass, indie and folk artists. Hardly Strictly Bluegrass is open to the public and free of charge.

(July 25, 1934 - December 18, 2011)

"What does move me is the philanthropic stuff," he told Forbes magazine in 2006. "Giving really does move me. Part of it is selfish. It's fun to be appreciated. But the other part is that good things really are growing."

He called the bluegrass festival a "selfish gift," one that he, the musicians and the community could all enjoy.

"How could you have more fun than that? What the hell is money for if it isn't for something like that?"
