Handsome Boy Modeling SchoolSchooled in the Finer Pointsby matthew thayer on Mar 25, 2005
Nathaniel Merriweather and Chest Rockwell haven't disappeared since we last heard from them in 1999. It's been a long time since the boys put out their first concept album, "So... How's Your Girl?". Chest begs to differ, "Between making the five-part video tape/DVD series, running and actually teaching at the Handsome Boy Institute, and the lecture tours -- now you're probably saying to yourself, "Wow, it came kinda quick." The quick is last years instructional long play, "White People", and our favorite teachers will lecture live at the Fillmore next week. If you haven't heard, Nathaniel is actually Dan "The Automator" Nakamura: a local guy, worldwide DJ extraordinaire, in demand producer and a part time member of the Gorillaz collective. Chest, when not teaching us the finer points in Ladies Man 101, is "Prince" Paul Huston, the influential producer of De La Soul's "3 Feet High and Rising" and a rapper in Gravediggaz. Handsome Boy attracted a long queue of students for its sophomore effort that, like the first, gives the listener a taste of their finishing school for the jetset. "White People" enrolls a classroom of students from around the musical world. Mike Patton and Jack Johnson perform together at the head of the class while Father Guido Sarducci lectures us. Cat Power, RZA, the kids from Linkin Park are all graduates as well. Although the report card on this latest album is as mixed as the talent on it, a Handsome pep rally at the Fillmore is sure to entertain. Mr. Merriweather wants us to know that although most of his students are now busy with their own careers, some will hit up the Handsome Boy Modeling School reunion.
