Please read this document carefully and forward to all members of your party.
Check-in Time: 8:30 a.m. for 9:00 a.m. departure (1/2 hour before departure)
Trip Length: 9:00 a.m- 12:00 p.m. Trips depart promptly as scheduled.
Vessel: Salty Lady – 56’ Coast Guard Certified fishing boat
Departs From: Pillar Point Harbor Marina (4 mi. north of Half Moon Bay)
DEPARTURE:
Pillar Point Harbor, Princeton-by-the-Sea, 4 miles north of the town of Half Moon Bay. Specific address for GPS or map search is 1 Johnson Pier, Half Moon Bay, CA 94019. From Highway 1, turn west at the stop light on Capistrano Road into Pillar Point Harbor. Please park in Lot "C.” Parking is free.
NATURALIST:
An Oceanic Society naturalist will meet you near the restroom at the entrance to the pier, across the walkway from the Harbor Master. Please do not disturb the Harbor Master.
TRIP STATUS: Trips may be cancelled by the Oceanic Society for any of these reasons:
1. Hazardous Sea Conditions – on the morning of the trip the Captain will assess sea conditions, specifically offshore wind and waves. If he determines it is unsafe to go out, the trip will be cancelled. The weather offshore can be dramatically different from the weather on land. Trip status is not available earlier than the morning of the trip as weather conditions can change overnight. Please call the Weather Status number below on the morning of your trip for an updated trip status. If it is raining, but sea conditions are safe, the trip will still depart. For those of you travelling long distances, we recommend planning an alternate activity in the area in the event the trip has to be cancelled. Please do not contact the Harbormaster; he doesn’t have this information.
2. Under-subscription – advance notice will be given along with an opportunity to re-schedule to another day, or receive a refund.
3. Other acts of God.
WEATHER STATUS: (415) 256-9524
Call after 7:00am for the 9:00am departure
SEASICKNESS:
Seasickness is a very real possibility as this is an open ocean trip. We strongly urge that you consult a pharmacist or physician about sea-sickness precautions and adhere strictly to manufacturer's directions (especially if medication must be taken hours prior to board¬ing). Be well rested the morning of your trip, avoiding alcoholic beverages the previous night. On the day of your trip, eat a high-protein, non-fatty breakfast. Bring crackers and soda if you anticipate queasiness. Remember, prevention is the only cure.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF RISK
This is an open-ocean trip and there are risks inherent in being on a vessel on the ocean. Our Naturalist or Captain will speak to you about ways you can ensure your safety, but the boat will be moving with the waves and swells, so please hold on as you move about the boat. You will be asked to sign an acknowledgement of the potential risks before the trip departs. We appreciate your cooperation and ask that you follow the instructions of the crew and naturalist at all times.
CLOTHING:
Warm layered clothing is best as it can be cold and windy on the ocean. We suggest rain gear (for sea spray, rain or wet fog), gloves, hat, sweaters, jacket, heavy socks and warm non-skid shoes or rain boots. Our trips go rain or shine, so be prepared.
EQUIPMENT:
Binoculars, sunglasses and sunscreen are strongly recommended. You may also wish to bring a camera with a telephoto lens and a cover to protect your camera from spray.
FOOD:
Our vessels do NOT have food available. Bring your own snacks and beverages in a day pack. The vessel cannot accommodate coolers or picnic baskets.
REFUNDS:
Reservations are non-refundable unless Oceanic Society cancels the trip some reason. If we do cancel your trip we will attempt to reach you to either reschedule or initiate a refund, but feel free to call the office at 415-256-9941. In no event shall our liability exceed the obligation to refund the amount you paid to us.
TURN-AROUNDS:
In the event a trip has to turn around after departing the dock, Oceanic Society has this policy:
• Vessel returns to the marina within first first hour, either a refund or rescheduling is possible and there will be no fuel charg assessed.
• Vessel returns to the marina after 1 hour, the trip will be considered complete and no refunds or rescheduling will occur.
NO-SHOWS AND LATECOMERS:
If you are late and the boat departs without you, or you decide not to go out, the entire fee is forfeited. No refunds will be given.
AGE LIMIT: Unpredictable sea conditions, seasickness, and trip duration necessitate these age restrictions:
- Children must be 8 years or older to go on this trip. No exceptions.
- We recommend all children under the age of 12 wear a life jacket at all times while on the boat.
- Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult
Vessels have life vests, are Coast Guard certified, and insured with limited indoor and outdoor seating.
GROUP BOOKINGS:
If you are the coordinator for a group booking, you are responsible distributing copies of this information - including WEATHER STATUS PHONE NUMBER - to all your group members.
ACCESSIBILITY:
