Hālau o Keikiali`i presents a Hula Production entitled Hilo Hanakahi
A wonderful and eclectic compilation of dance and music first time ever presented on stage by the talents of Hālau o Keikiali`i and a special tribute to composer and singer Lena Machado.

San Bruno - Hālau o Keikiali`i (Peninsula based Hula School) is pleased to announce its upcoming Ho`ike (Hula performance), entitled, Hilo Hanakahi - Songs of Hilo and featuring the music of Hawai`i’s Songbird, Lena Machado, on Saturday, August 13, 2016, at 6:00 pm. The performances will take place at Samuel Johnson Jr. @ Capuchino High School, 1501 Magnolia Ave in San Bruno. Tickets are $30-50. Hilo Hanakahi pays homage to Hawai`i Island, home of Kumu Kawika's hula lineage: Kumu Rae Kahikilaulani Fonseca and Hula Master George Lanakila Keikiahiali`i Na`ope. With a cast of over 70 performers, ranging from ages 5-85, Hilo Hanakahi will delight you with exciting Ancient chants and dances as well as some modern compositions by Kumu Kawika himself. A special tribute will be made to the brilliant composer/singer Lena Machado whose songs have stood the test of time. Special musical guests will join the stage including Hawaiian musician and Singer/Pianist Mamina Koga all the way from Kichijyoji, Japan. Wonderful arrangements and melodic harmonies will captivate your soul.

A truly extraordinary treat is to have our MC Story teller - Master Kumu Hula Hōkūlani Holt of Wailuku, Maui, delight you with her stories and insight of Hawai`i island. Aunty Hōkū (as she is lovingly called) is a world-renowned kumu hula, well-respected Hawaiian culture specialist, founder of several cultural organizations and educational programs throughout Hawai`i. Kawika states "Part of the magic of our hula production is the story telli..."
Lobby doors will open at 4pm for a special food & shopping event featuring hand made products such as: Natural made jewelry with lauhala, ipu, seeds, clay and many other arts and crafts.

Hālau o Keikiali`i is a Hawaiian Cultural Group based in South San Francisco. Since 1994, its goal has been to educate the public about Hawaiian Culture, and its traditional customs, values and protocols. Besides having regular scheduled classes, Hālau o Keikiali`i strives to perpetuate the rich culture of Hawaiian people through educational workshops, performances, and other cultural events. Kawika Alfiche, Kumu Hula (Hula Teacher) of Hālau o Keikiali`i and Director of the Kaululehua Hawaiian Cultural Center states, "The great part about this production is its appeal to both young and old, for the avid hula audience or first timers. Hilo Hanakahi is sure to be an inspiring production with lively dances, chants, songs and beautiful clothing that will include the entire hālau, some 70 dancers, with ages ranging from 5 to 85 years old. Hula Hanakahi will highlight Ancient songs and dances of Hilo and a tribute to the brilliant composer and singer Lena Machado.
