Gui Boratto, architect, musician, composer and producer returns to SF!

Budding techno heavyweight and creative polymath Gui Boratto has come a long way from his roots in the advertising sector of his Brazilian home town of São Paolo.A student of architecture and design, Gui's earliest musical work came in the studio producing many commercial pop and rock acts. It wasn't until Gui's self released 2004 debut album 'Royal House', when he drew attention for it's juxtaposition of latin percussive elements with classic French House. After sending a two track demo to Kompakt in 2005, Gui shot to prominence with the release of 12 inch 'Arquipélago' on K2, catalyzing a number of well received singles on labels such as Audiomatique, Plastic City and Kompakt's Pop imprint.Infusing a much needed dose of colour amidst the monochrome minimal landscape, his 2007 debut album 'Chromophobia' drew unanimous critical praise and sparked an avalanche of distinct productions and remixes. Singles 'Mr Decay' and the epic anthem 'A Beautiful Life' became emblematic of a greater scene shift toward richer melodic climes, the latter being particularly special as it features Gui's wife, Luciana Villanova, on vocals. With a style characterized by a combination of blissful pop sensibilities and complex dance floor arrangements, Gui soon developed a distinct aesthetic profile, aided by the live arrangement of his favorite tracks on the 'Addicted' compilation released on Platipus in 2007. Gui has himself featured on innumerable compilations, from club mixes released by Fabric, Ministry of Sound and Cocoon to essential label mixes from Pokerflat, Mobilee and DFA.His remix abilities are also in high demand, with Gui having worked with artists as high profile as Goldfrapp and The Pet Shop Boys, as well as contributing interpretations of his contemporaries from SCSI-9 to Bomb the Bass. As Brazil's premiere techno export, Gui has developed a reputation for his relentless touring schedule, and has graced the stage of the most prominent clubs and festivals in the electronic music sphere both as solo performer and alongside Kompakt head Michael Mayer. On that collaborative tip, Gui has joined forces with a number of producers over the years, most recently releasing productions in collaboration with German house luminaries Marc Romboy and Martin Eyerer on Systematic and Audiomatique respectively. With the sophisticated sophomore album 'Take My Breath Away' dropping in early 2009 and a comprehensive calendar of dates in support, Gui shows no sign of slowing the momentum that has powered his ascent to the pinnacle of the electronic music community.

His most recent release on Kompakt, III, was quick to gain attention and high praises across the globe. As Spin Magazine writes, 'With III he digs deep into psychoacoustic sound design, ominously repetitive grooves, and contorted chord progressions. Warehouse rave bombast turns into living-room intimacy; the closing track, "This Is Not the End," perfectly mixes New Order, the Postal Service, and M83.'

Kink

KiNK has become one of house music's most in demand producers and remixers: his tracks easily stand out in any club night and they are second to none in the most competitive environment electronic music has ever seen. His abilities in finding the 'sweet spot' of new machines, or even of sounds considered 'classic' and to reshape them into totally different beasts would be wholly enough to justify the phenomenon. Yet this barely touches the surface of the story.

Arguably the world of dance music has not witnessed anyone else rising from bottom to top so clearly just by the centrifugal force of sheer talent. Being based in Sofia, Bulgaria, without a support network, a campaign or any media hype, his music alone – live and in the studio – created a momentum whose end we have yet to see.

Having met Neville Watson over the internet, he first gained recognition with the duo's collaborative releases on Amsterdam's Rush Hour. "Inside Out" and "Full Flight" were huge records in 2008 already, but it was an unassuming video of KiNK tweaking a drum machine at home that landed him a gig at Berlin's ever emblematic Panorama Bar. This also hints at what set him on a trail of live sets right up to #3 on Resident Advisor's poll in 2013 – the second consecutive year he entered the top 5. By today, he has played the world several times over.

Thus, KiNK's live sets are the key to understanding how he creates unparalleled enthusiasm on stage and through his studio output. By now, a guy with a laptop has become the most common sight in a club. Yet the visual discrepancy between the dynamics of sound and the statics of a mouse click has driven most ambitious live acts to sideshow tricks: visuals, LED screens, compensatory dancing – smoke and mirrors. By contrast, KiNK's live sets simply take the hood off – strictly in terms of sound. A small set up of machines and controllers, where every knob turned produces an audible result. The energy shift happening right when he enters the stage is strikingly obvious. Often he will pass a machine to the audience and incorporate their input in real time. This happens at mind-boggling speed – hyperactive, yet holding down grooves to kill for. KiNK's ability to nail smash beats on the fly, well visibly and audibly, that most people couldn't program in weeks of studio work – this 'credibility of sound' right where it matters is what sparks the love everywhere he visits.
