Gringa
Gringa is a 5-piece band (drums, bass, percussion, guitar/cavaco, sax, vocals) based in San Francisco, CA that blends Brazilian and Caribbean rhythms/instruments with elements of Pop, Jazz, Funk, Dub, and Hip Hop. Gringa plays mostly originals and some covers, with lyrics in both English and Portuguese, and utilize various rhythms like samba, xote, baião, son, and reggaeton. By weaving Brazilian and Cuban rhythms through nomadic love songs and millenial musings, Gringa aspires to forge new musical sounds and dissolve cultural barriers while uplifting the listener.
The Slippery Slope
In 1999, frustrated with the conventions of hardcore punk, Kendon Smith struck out with the idea of creating a group which maintained his punk ethos, but explored the sonic spectrum of his interests, which were at the time largely dominated by atomic age retro pop, international pop, latin jazz, psychedelic soul, big band jazz and easy listening. It took 8 years of ebb and flow to finally begin in Oakland, CA with a skeleton crew of similarly inspired and skilled players. They have since ping-ponged from club to club, gaining appreciation with each performance, a collision of "cool" and "square" to conjure new angles and contours in sound, not bogged down by the fads that their contemporaries long to emulate. A bit of thrift store elegance for the people...
