| About Great American Music Hall (GAMH) San Francisco's oldest and grandest nightclub, the Great American Music Hall carries guests back to an earlier, more elegant era, with its ornate balconies, soaring marble columns and elaborate ceiling frescoes. Long-time customers and newcomers alike feel at home in the 5,000-square-foot concert hall that symbolized renewal and optimism when it opened in 1907. Today, a professional sound and lighting system, two full bars, a modern kitchen and a spacious oak dance floor help to blend contemporary quality with turn-of-the-century graciousness. |

Editorial Review Supergrass An Interview with Bassist Micky Quinn By Roger Thomasson (02/17/2006)" Every band has its mythology. As a budding folk guitarist, punk icon Joe Strummer adopted the moniker of his unlikely hero -- Woody Guthrie. Richey James, lyricist for the Manic Street Preachers, has been mysteriously missing since 1995. And Gaz Coombes, the front-man for Supergrass, needed his Mom to co-sign his first record deal at the tender age of 16. " |
Editorial Review Hold Steady at GAMH, 10/18 By Roger Thomasson (10/07/2005)" The retro-centric obsession steering our culture can often make it difficult to avoid the numbing effect of familiarity. Listen to a modern rock station, and you are likely to hear a NEW new-wave band back to back with an OLD new-wave band. Needless to say, those not up on their Rolling Stone and Spin would be hard pressed to tell the difference. This is not a general criticism -- a good song is a good song no matter when it was produced, and there is certainly much to love and mimic from decades past. However, if historical "references" become too encompassing and too plagiaristic, we risk cultural stagnation. " |
Editorial Review Feist at Great American Music Hall, 9/17 Canadian Chanteuse with an Indie Twist By Ginevra Kirkland (09/09/2005)" Feist's roots can be seen in everything from Ella Fitzgerald to Burt Bacharach, combining immense vocal talent with a knack for understanding the fun in being today's reigning indie princess. Born Leslie Feist and hailing from the Great White North, reared in rock bands and inspired by turntablists, she's a rollicking good-time gal one minute and a pensive chanteuse the next. For fans of Broken Social Scene, Arcade Fire, and the other Canuck powerhouses, this is a show not to be missed. In case you needed to add another Canadian pop darling with impeccable taste to your list of essential artists, give her a listen at GAMH. " |
