The next Grapevine wine tasting will take place on September 9th at 7:00pm in the Berkeley City Club.
We shall taste Pinot Gris. Pinot Gris is the name by which the grape is known in most of France. However, in parts of France it is called Malvoisie, and natives of Alsace call it Tokay. In Italy it is known as Pinot Grigio. In Germany it is called Rulander. It is grown domestically as well, for instance in Oregon's Willamette Valley.
By whatever name, the grape is a mutation from Pinot Noir. Jancis Robinson describes Pinot Gris as soft, gently perfumed and with more substance and color than most whites. "It fulfills a unique function," she says, "as provider of super-rich, usually dry wines that can be partnered with food without the distraction of too much aroma."
As always, each attendee should bring a bottle of our featured wine. It is your call as to price, vintage, and provenance as long as it is some version of Pinot Gris.
