Grabhorn Institute

Museums , City , School

A living museum of printing history, the Grabhorn Institute supports the fine press publisher Arion Press and the historic typefoundry of M & H Type. Our gallery is open free to the public Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

We offer weekly live demonstration tours of the traditional methods of bookmaking, including typecasting, printing, and bookbinding, every Thursday at 3:00 p.m. Tour fee: $7 per person. Reservations recommended.

We are the last fully-functioning integrated typefoundry, letterpress print shop, and hand bookbindery.  Tour visitors have the chance to witness firsthand the making of books, from the casting of type from hot metal, through printing by letterpress machinery, to bookbinding by hand.
