Sexy and Satisfying

The first quarter of 2010 may be over, but it’s never too late to make this the year you “get in shape”. If you’ve tried everything the gym has to offer and can’t find something you can stick with, consider giving these options a whirl.

Burlesque
I don’t know about you, but getting a workout while figuring out how to twirl tasseled pasties and stripping with boas sounds fun to me! Thanks to Bombshell Betty and Red Hots Burlesque, anyone can learn and practice the techniques of burlesque, the origins of which fall somewhere in the 19th to 20th century range. Learn to strut your stuff and feel good about it!

If trying out Bombshell Betty, start with the “Intro to Burlesquercise,” which starts next on May 19th with a three-class series — and if it tickles your fancy, sign up for the Intensives! What will you learn? The “Bump-and-grind warmup and workout”, burlesque strut, how to create your own retro-style dance moves and choreography, and more. If you are shy, don’t worry; no nudity is required.

Red Hots Burlesque’s “proud professor” Dottie Lux curates her own workshops for her School of Shimmy. Classes are held Tuesdays at El Rio and Sundays at Medium Reality Boylesque’s Studio in SOMA. There is limited space, so reservations are recommended. Classes are open to any age or gender. The introductory two-hour workshop, “Burlesque 101”, introduces you to the history of burlesque, how to create a stage persona, and basic choreography.

HoopDance
Hula-hoops might evoke childhood memories, but they are also a fantastic, non-monotonous way for people of all ages to stay fit. Similar to burlesque, proponents of HoopDance claim that in addition to the physical benefits, this workout boosts your confidence and sense of sensuality (“boosts libido!”). HoopGirl offers multi-level drop-in classes, for beginner, intermediate and advanced participants at three locations in San Francisco and two in Mill Valley. As the name implies, HoopDance incorporates dancing with hooping. Private training sessions are also available for one-on-one classes, small group bookings, parties, and bachelorette parties.

Double Dutch
Double Dutch jump rope is badass. For proof, look no further than SFC Double Dutch, formed in 2008 by “dangerous dames” Death Valley, Venomiss, and Switchblade. The sassy trio teaches Double Dutch classes in three levels. Introductory Level 1 lasts six weeks, and interested parties of any fitness level are welcome to attend. Unfortunately, a cursory search of their site revealed only Level 2 and All Stars classes. so an inquiry might be in order if you’re a beginner.
