Zener Schon Contemporary Art, Mill Valley, presents From Each to West: A Bi-Coastal Dialogue, an exhibition guest curated by Mateo Mize, featuring eight internationally acclaimed mixed media artists with deep roots individually and collectively in New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area. The exhibition runs from March 31st to May 17th, 2015. A reception for the artists will take place on Saturday, April 4th from 6-8pm.
Participating New York based artists Miky Fabrega, Peter Gronquist, Ted Lawson, Chad Muska, Alison Mosshart, Shelter Serra, Ivory Serra and Jamie Martinez deliver an exhibition that addresses the contemporary human experience of “The Survival of the Fittest”. They do so by referencing a set of symbols that we depend on to define our roles as humans within American culture. They also shine a light on how technology, both old and new, is constantly effecting how we position ourselves and thus, how art is perceived.
Panamanian – New York based artist Miky Fabrega’s obsession with stolen imagery, billboards and advertisements questions how we cover up history and therefore arrest our present motion. His paintings embody a distinct array of gestural fluidity, poised composition and in-depth investigation into the matter of subjects he presents.
Brooklyn based Ted Lawson combines digital technology with highly crafted traditional sculpting methods to seamlessly produce conceptual abstract and figurative objects questioning the essence of truth that underlies our human existence.
Deeply embedded in the rampant American consumerism and gun culture, the work of Peter Gronquist examines the constant collision of man and the animal kingdom through paintings and sculpture. His medium includes using taxidermy and semi-automatic weapons festooned with gold leaf. These pieces humorously questioning who is really dominating whom by displaying the aggressor and the innocent as one.
Living and working from both Los Angeles and New York, professional skateboarder and artist Chad Muska uses the language of abstraction to bring the sensibility of his urban experience to his work. He does so with a raw modern conceptual aesthetic and media such as cement, steel, screen and wood panel.
Known as the lead vocalist for the indie rock group “The Kills”, and a member of the band “The Dead Weather” with Jack White, Alison Mosshart’s mixed media works on paper, pen and ink drawings, and acrylics on canvas depict the frenzied sense of motion that she encounters on a daily basis. Depicted with a powerful sense of emotion, we see the influence of Raymond Pettibon, Ralph Steadman and Egon Schiele in her work.
Twin brothers Shelter Serra of RISD and Ivory Serra of Hunter College pay homage to east/west coast experiences from their New York based studios. Shelter’s three works titled “Pavilions” are a rendering of cubist abstraction with a minimal perspective by using a quasi-kaleidoscopic effect. Ivory’s photography has featured prominently in the fine art world, major commercial campaigns, and several publications including the book “Full Bleed”, the history of skateboarding in NYC.
Jamie Martinez’s reconstructed oil paintings explore the role that technology plays in how art is perceived, translated and presented with “triangulism”, a unique process involving the cutting up of images into triangulated segments to express their essential form and true nature.
