Free Historic Tours To Celebrate 110th Anniversary

SEE EVENT DETAILS
March 21, 2014 marks the 110th anniversary of the legendary Westin St. Francis, San Francisco’s most iconic hotel. Originally opened in 1904 to international acclaim, the hotel quickly became the center of the west coast’s social, theatrical and business life.

Throughout the entire year, guests and locals will have the opportunity to learn about the hotel’s rich history during complimentary tours held on the 21st of each month at 1:10 pm. These ambassador-led tours include the Landmark Lobby, the renowned Magneta Clock and the historic cases filled with relics that exemplify the story of the hotel. Tours begin in the Landmark Lobby. Free and open to the public. Tours are appropriate for children age 5 and up.

Here are two samples of history vitrines that are available for viewing:

History Vitrine
• Many charred items were found after the 1906 Earthquake and Fire. Some of the items in the Hotel's archives include: a cold cream container, spoons, hair brooches, a diary cover, and several watch movements and cases.
• The first St. Francis cater-out was served by Master Chef Victor Hirtzler and maitre d'hotel James Woods in Union Square following the 1906 earthquake and fire.
• Francis" The Fox Terrier, belonged to the wine steward, and was found hiding in the hotel basement among exploded bottles of wine and champagne several days after the 1906 Earthquake.

History Vitrine
• China for special occasions.
• Doorman's Cap circa 1960s.
• Tower Frame May 14, 1971 (Photo: Don Aron Commercial Photography/SF)
• Coin washing, a St. Francis tradition. In a time when it was high fashion for women to wear white gloves, coins were a cause of soiling the gloves. To reduce the dilemma, Hotel Manager Dan London made an innovative decision to have all of the Hotel's coins washed before recirulating them to the Hotel's guests and visitors. Coin Washer Arnold Batliner was employed by the St. Francis and became the Hotel's official coin washer for thirty five years. A unique tradition at the Hotel until his retirement in 1993. "Pennies are the hardest to wash," he
said.
