Franciscan was founded in 1972 by a group of lawyers and doctors from San Francisco who were making their foray into the wine business. When this group declared bankruptcy just a few years later, Raymond Duncan and Justin Meyer, business and winemaking partners who also owned Silver Oak, bought Franciscan in 1975.
