Whimsical earrings and hair combs to luxe mixed media amulets and necklaces will be showcased and discussed at the Foothill Is A Gem Fundraiser hosted by the Foothill Commission Friday, May 31, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Campus Center Dining Room at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills. Parking is free and a $20 tax-deductible donation is requested. Light refreshments will be served.
Many of the jewelry pieces featured at the event are from the collection of Foothill College President Judy C. Miner, Ed.D., who has assembled an impressive gallery of couture costume items from New York-based Lunch at The Ritz, as well as San Francisco-based artist Masha Archer. At 5 p.m., Dr. Miner will discuss her collection of unusual costume jewelry, and share the interesting stories behind some of the key pieces from her extensive collection.
The event will also showcase exquisite custom and vintage jewelry designed by local artists. Many of these signature pieces will be available for purchase. Jade Candy by Belinda Chung of BK Collections, and Karen Beswick, Cindy Greene, Barbara Bernstein, Wesley Brando, Cindy Worthington-Levy and Tuareg Jewelry are just a few of the featured jewelry artists who will attend. All artisans are donating a percentage of their sales to Foothill’s Stretch to Kindergarten Program.
Dedicated to supporting the students, programs and services at Foothill College, the members of the all-volunteer Foothill Commission are focusing their energies on assisting the college’s Family Engagement Institute (FEI) and its innovative Stretch to Kindergarten Program. With the mission to strengthen the capacity of families, schools and communities to ensure the success of all students, Foothill’s FEI provides educational opportunities for underserved families with children.
The Stretch to Kindergarten Program is a tuition-free, parent-participation spring and summer kindergarten readiness program that cultivates strong, enduring partnerships that give low-income children the skills and support to successfully transition into kindergarten. The program is designed to strengthening families’ capacity to support their children’s learning in school and beyond.
The Foothill Commission is a group of more than 25 dedicated friends of Foothill College, whose goal is to promote the college within the community, and to engage in projects, activities and fundraising in support of educational excellence for students.
