Flying Ace and the Storm of the Century

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Created in 2013 to commemorate the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, Flying Ace is a duet performance exploring how people negotiate extreme climatic events. The greatest challenge currently facing vulnerable communities globally is adaptation to climate-driven disasters. How do we respond? How can we build resilience and hope? How do we talk to our families about this difficult topic?

Perched on the roof of his house, armed only with a typewriter and a rare imagination, a dog attempts to adapt after a hurricane left him stranded and floating far away from home. Inspired by Charles Shultz’s iconic beagle Snoopy, this show incorporates leading climate science, live music, and bold physicality.

The Flying Ace team will also be hosting workshops on Eco-theater and Art & Activism throughout the area, at schools, universities, and community organizations, including: Destiny Arts Center, East Bay Center for the Performing Arts, San Jose State University, Lick Wilmerding, University High, Oakes College, University of California: Santa Cruz, and California State University: Monterey Bay.

Originally commissioned by The Earth Institute / PositiveFeedback for Marfa Dialogues NY 2013, with support from the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation.

Originally developed while in residence at Denmark's Odin Teatret and Vestjyllands Hojskole, produced by Per Bech Jensen, Cultural Collaboration Mid & West Jutland and Aarhus2015.

What are people saying about FLYING ACE?

"Theatre at its best: intelligent and entertaining."
-Ulrik Skeel, Odin Teatret

"An innovative and incredibly accessible story that manages to do what very few can do---make climate change humorous, while invoking a desire for action from an audience. "
-Tara DePorte, Founder and Executive Director, Human Impacts Institute

“Flying Ace is captivating; a delightful piece of theater about dealing with severe weather that is endearing, smart and funny. It is just what we need in the quest to grab hearts and minds on the issue of how we ourselves might manage in our increasingly disaster-troubled world."
-Jennifer Newell, American Museum of Natural History

"Vigorous...finding pathos and sweet humor throughout the precision and energy of the performance."
-Marya Ursin, Mystic Paper Beasts/The Dragon's Egg

About Superhero Clubhouse

Superhero Clubhouse is a collective of artists and scientists working at the intersection of environmentalism and theater. Based in NYC since 2008, Superhero Clubhouse takes a holistic approach to theater in which content, process, and production remain tethered to complex environmental questions. We work collaboratively, rigorously, and sustainably upon a foundation of sound science to create intimate, fictional events that ignite crucial environmental conversations. We believe that the way we make art should be a model for a thriving society; therefore our design and production processes are vigilantly green. Our various initiatives, engaging diverse audiences and communities, tenaciously pursue deep ecological consciousness, revolutionary theater, and tangible hope in the face of great adversity.

We run four initiatives: the Planet Plays (a series of nine full-length, multi-disciplinary productions inspired by particular questions of ecology as well as the history and mythology of the planets), Climate Collaborations (annual family-friendly productions made in collaboration with climate scientists), Big Green Theater (an award-winning eco-playwriting program for Brooklyn fifth-graders produced in partnership with The Bushwick Starr Theater) and the Lab (a bimonthly creative workshop intended to develop a working model of collaboration between environmental scientists, policy experts and theater artists).
