Films at Goehe: 25 Years after the Berlin Wall

West
Directed by Christian Schwochow; Germany, 102 min., 2013

Content:
Based on the novel by Julia Franck: Two suitcases, a schoolbag, a cuddly toy – that’s all Nelly Senff and her son Alexej take with them to start their new life. A Volkswagen stops in front of their house in East Berlin. Nelly is nervous. The year is 1978, it’s summer, three years after the death of Wassilij, Nelly’s boyfriend and Alexej’s father, who died in a car accident in Russia. For a fresh start, they head for the West. The first place of refuge is a cramped emergency camp in West Berlin. While there, the past catches up with Nelly: The western secret services are asking for Wassilii. She has to decide if the trauma of the past could destroy the future she had in mind for her and her son.
Director Christian Schwochow was born in 1978 in Bergen on the island of Rügen. He worked as an author and a radio and television reporter before studying directing at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg. He collaborated with his mother, Heide Schwochow, in the screenwriting of his feature films November Child (2008), Cracks in the Shell (2011) and West (2013).
