Film: STATIONS OF THE CROSS (KREUZWEG)

SEE EVENT DETAILS
STATIONS OF THE CROSS (KREUZWEG)
Director: Dietrich Brüggemann, 107 min., 2014

Film screening in the context of "Celebrating 500 Years Reformation in the SF Bay Area"

PLOT:
Maria (Lea van Acken) is 14 and lives with her parents and three siblings in a small town in southern Germany. They are all strict Catholics and are part of the (fictional) Society of St. Paul. This religious community rejects every reform which has been introduced by the Church since the 1960s and advocates strict faith, as it has always allegedly been taught.

Maria's family has also set down strict rules, just like the Church. The domineering mother (Franziska Weisz) constantly reprimands her eldest daughter, worried that Maria could slip out of her control. The French au-pair Bernadette (Lucie Aron) is Maria's role model and confidant. She has also been brought up in the Society of St. Paul, although her upbringing was less strict than that of Maria and her siblings.

On the day of her Confirmation, Maria faints in the church. The doctor who examines her becomes aware of the uneasy relationship between Maria and her mother. His diagnosis is malnutrition and severe psychological distress, and he instructs her to be taken to hospital.

Once in the hospital, Maria tells Bernadette of her plan to sacrifice herself to God in order to heal her brother who suffers from a rare illness and doesn't speak. Bernadette tries to talk her out of it and informs the doctors, but help arrives too late.

REVIEW:
'Stations of the Cross' convincingly grapples with religious imagery and metaphors and their fundamentalist interpretation, while also painting the oppressive portrait of a family. (Rolling Stone)

German with English subtitles
Suggested donation: $5
